How Does a Pool Skimmer Float Valve Work?

A pool skimmer float valve works by using a simple mechanism to prevent air from being sucked into your pool's filtration system when the water level drops too low.

Understanding the Pool Skimmer Float Valve

The primary purpose of a skimmer float valve is to protect your pool pump. If the pool water level falls below the skimmer opening, the skimmer can start sucking in air instead of water. This can cause the pump to lose its prime, potentially leading to damage or burnout. The float valve acts as a safeguard against this scenario.

The Simple Mechanism

Inside the float valve assembly, which is typically located within the skimmer basket area, there is a small plastic float. This float is designed to prevent air from passing through the skimmer line and reaching the pump when the pool water level drops below the skimmer entrance.

Here's how it functions based on the water level:

  • Normal Water Level: When the pool's water level is within the operational range (high enough to fill the skimmer), the plastic float is buoyant and sits higher in the valve assembly. This position allows water to flow freely from the skimmer into the suction line connected to your pool pump.
  • Low Water Level: If the pool water level drops significantly, falling below the opening of the skimmer, the skimmer begins to draw air. As the water level inside the skimmer well drops, the buoyancy holding the float up is reduced. The plastic float then drops down.

Preventing Air Intrusion

As the reference states, when the water level drops and the float descends, it seals against another black O-ring located within the float valve assembly. This seal effectively blocks the passage of air from the skimmer into the suction line.

  • Action: Float drops down due to lack of water buoyancy.
  • Result: Float seals against the O-ring.
  • Outcome: Air is prevented from entering the pump's suction line.

By sealing off the line, the float valve prevents the pump from running dry or sucking excessive amounts of air, which could cause it to lose prime and potentially overheat.

Key Benefits

  • Pump Protection: Saves your pool pump from running dry or losing prime when water levels are low.
  • System Efficiency: Ensures the pump is consistently moving water, maintaining filtration efficiency.
  • Reduced Wear and Tear: Prevents stress on the pump caused by air cavitation.

Essentially, the pool skimmer float valve is a simple, passive device that uses the natural rise and fall of the water level to open or close a valve, protecting your pool's circulation system.
