How to Add DE to a Sand Filter System

Published in Pool Filter Maintenance 2 mins read

Okay, here's how you can add Diatomaceous Earth (DE) to a sand filter system to enhance its filtration, based on the method described.

While sand filters primarily use sand as their filtration medium, adding a small amount of Diatomaceous Earth (DE) to the system can significantly improve their ability to trap finer particles. This process involves introducing the DE into the pool's circulation system via the skimmer, allowing it to form a thin layer on top of the sand bed within the filter.

Here is the process for adding DE to your sand filter system:

  1. Prepare the DE Slurry: Mix 1/4 cup of DE powder with water in a bucket. Stir it until it forms a smooth slurry, which is a watery mix.
  2. Prepare the Skimmer: If you use a Skimmer Sock, remove it before adding the DE mixture.
  3. Pour Slowly into Skimmer: With the pool pump running, slowly pour the DE slurry you prepared into the skimmer opening. The pump will draw the mixture into the filter system.
  4. Allow System Stabilization: Give the system about two minutes to stabilize and circulate the mixture through the filter.
  5. Check Filter Pressure: Note the current pressure reading on your filter's pressure gauge.
  6. Repeat if Necessary: Repeat steps 1 through 5 (mixing another 1/4 cup of DE, pouring into the skimmer, waiting, and checking pressure) until the filter pressure has gone up by one PSI (pounds per square inch). This slight increase indicates that a sufficient amount of DE has coated the sand bed.

This method helps to trap smaller debris that the sand alone might miss, resulting in clearer pool water. Remember to follow this process carefully and monitor your filter pressure as instructed.
