How Does Pool Sand Work?

Published in Pool Filtration 2 mins read

A pool sand filter uses sand to purify pool water. It works by forcing water through a chamber filled with sand. The sand traps debris, dirt, and other contaminants, leaving cleaner water to flow back into the pool.

How it works:

  1. Water enters the filter: The pool pump pushes water through the filter's multiport valve and into the filter tank.
  2. Water flows through the sand: The water flows downward through the sand bed, where the sand captures particles larger than the sand grains.
  3. Clean water exits the filter: The filtered water then exits the tank through the multiport valve and back into the pool.

Sand Filter Efficiency:

  • Different sized sand: The size of the sand grains impacts the filtration efficiency. Finer sand catches smaller particles, while coarser sand captures larger debris.
  • Regular Backwashing: Backwashing is crucial for keeping the sand clean and the filter efficient. It involves reversing the flow of water through the filter to remove trapped debris.
  • Maintaining Proper Pressure: The pressure gauge on the filter indicates its efficiency. A high pressure reading signals a clogged filter that needs backwashing.

Advantages of Sand Filters:

  • Cost-Effective: Sand filters are relatively inexpensive compared to other filtration systems.
  • Long-lasting: Sand doesn't need to be replaced as frequently as cartridges.
  • Easy Maintenance: Backwashing is relatively simple to perform.

Disadvantages of Sand Filters:

  • Lower Filtration Efficiency: Sand filters may not be as effective at removing the smallest particles compared to cartridge filters.
  • Potentially Higher Chemical Use: As sand filters don't remove all contaminants, you may need to use more chemicals to keep the pool clean.

Overall, pool sand filters provide a cost-effective and reliable way to keep your pool clean and clear. While they may not filter out every microscopic particle, they offer a good balance of performance and affordability.
