How do sand filter pumps work?

Published in Pool Maintenance 2 mins read

Sand filter pumps clean water by forcing it through a bed of sand. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Water Intake: The pool water, containing debris and impurities, is drawn into the pump.

  2. Distribution: The unfiltered water is then distributed evenly across the top of the sand bed inside the filter tank.

  3. Filtration Process: Water drains downward through the sand. The sand acts as a filter, trapping dirt, debris, algae, and other particles. Different grades of sand are often used to filter out varying particle sizes.

  4. Collection: At the bottom of the tank, a lateral assembly (a set of slotted pipes) collects the filtered water. These laterals prevent the sand from entering the plumbing system.

  5. Return to Pool: The filtered water is then pumped back into the pool through the outlet line, completing the circulation process.

In summary, the sand filter pump works by:

  • Intake: Drawing in dirty water.
  • Filtration: Passing the water through sand, which traps debris.
  • Collection: Gathering the filtered water.
  • Return: Pumping clean water back into the pool.
