How do you backwash a saltwater pool filter?

Published in Pool Maintenance 2 mins read

Backwashing a saltwater pool filter is a crucial maintenance step to keep your pool water clean and clear. Here's a simplified guide based on common practices:

  1. Turn the filter system OFF. It's essential to power down your filter before changing the valve position to prevent damage.

  2. Set the multiport valve to "Backwash." This redirects the water flow to flush out the collected debris.

  3. Turn the system ON and let it run until the water in the sight glass (if your filter has one) is clear. This usually takes 2-3 minutes. This removes the accumulated dirt and debris from the filter.

  4. Turn the filter system OFF again.

  5. Set the multiport valve to "Rinse." This helps settle the filter media and prevents dirt from re-entering the pool.

  6. Turn the system ON and let it run for about one minute.

  7. Turn the filter system OFF.

  8. Return the multiport valve to "Filter." This is the normal operating position.

  9. Turn the system ON. Your filter is now backwashed and ready for normal operation.

Remember to monitor the pressure gauge on your filter. A significant increase in pressure (usually 8-10 PSI above the normal operating pressure) indicates that it's time to backwash. Also, be aware that backwashing will lower the water level in your pool, so you may need to add water afterward.
