A pool skimmer works by using the pool pump to draw water and surface debris into a basket, preventing it from sinking and contaminating the rest of the pool. When the pool pump is active, water flows into the skimmer opening, carrying leaves, bugs, and other floating debris into a removable basket. When the pump is off, a skimmer door (weir) typically closes, trapping debris within the skimmer and preventing it from floating back into the pool.
