How to Adjust Water Level in Pool?

Published in Pool Maintenance 3 mins read

Adjusting your pool's water level is a routine maintenance task necessary to keep your pump and skimmers working efficiently. Whether it's too high after heavy rain or too low from evaporation, maintaining the correct level is crucial.

Lowering Your Pool Water Level

Sometimes, the water level in your pool can become too high, covering the skimmer opening too much. This can reduce skimming effectiveness and potentially overflow. A common method to lower the water level uses your pool's filtration system, specifically the "WASTE" setting on the multiport valve. This setting bypasses the filter and pumps water directly out of the system, usually to a drain or designated area.

Steps to Lower Water Using the Waste Setting

Follow these steps carefully to lower your pool's water level using the waste function:

  1. Start with your pump OFF.
  2. Open the two-way valve if there is one. This valve controls flow from different parts of the pool (like main drain or skimmer). Ensure the necessary valves are open to draw water from the pool.
  3. Move the multiport valve to "WASTE". This setting diverts water out of the system. Be sure the pump is OFF when changing valve positions to prevent damage.
  4. Turn the pump ON and run until you reach the desired water level. The water will be pumped out of the pool. Keep a close eye on the water level as it drops.
  5. Turn the pump OFF. Once the desired level is reached, immediately turn off the pump.
  6. Move the multiport valve back to "FILTER". This returns the system to normal filtration mode.

Important Considerations

  • Desired Level: The ideal water level is typically about halfway up the skimmer opening.
  • Wasting Water: Be aware that using the "WASTE" setting sends pool water, which may contain chemicals, out of the pool. Check local regulations regarding discharging pool water.
  • Monitor Closely: The water level can drop quickly when using the waste setting. Do not leave the pump running unattended.

Raising Your Pool Water Level

If the water level is too low (below the halfway point of the skimmer), your pump might start sucking air, which can cause damage. Raising the level is simple: just add water. You can use a garden hose to add water directly into the pool until the level is back within the optimal range.

Maintaining the proper water level is a simple yet vital part of pool care, ensuring your equipment operates correctly and extends its lifespan.
