How to Backwash a DE Pool Filter?

Published in Pool Maintenance 4 mins read

To backwash a DE (Diatomaceous Earth) pool filter, you'll need to reverse the flow of water to flush out the accumulated dirt and DE. Here's how to do it, depending on your valve type:

Understanding the Importance of Backwashing

Backwashing is crucial for maintaining a clean and efficient pool filter. Over time, the DE grids become clogged with debris, reducing water flow and filtration effectiveness. Regular backwashing removes this buildup, restoring optimal performance.

Steps for Backwashing (General)

  1. Turn Off the Pump: Always turn off the pool pump before changing any valve positions. This prevents damage to the pump and filter.
  2. Prepare the Backwash Hose: Connect the backwash hose to the waste port on your filter. Make sure the hose is properly positioned to drain the water away from your pool and any sensitive areas.
  3. Set the Valve to Backwash: The exact procedure depends on your valve type (see below).

Backwashing a Slide Valve:

  1. Turn Off the Pump: Ensure the pump is turned off.
  2. Backwash Position: Turn the backwash handle and carefully pull the valve piston straight up to the backwash position.
  3. Lock the Piston: Lock the piston into position to prevent it from sliding up during the backwashing operation.
  4. Turn On the Pump: Turn on the pump.
  5. Backwash: Let the water run until it clears (usually 2-3 minutes). You can monitor this through the sight glass on the filter (if equipped).
  6. Turn Off the Pump: Turn the pump off again.
  7. Return to Filter Position: Push the valve piston back down to the filter position. Ensure it is properly seated.
  8. Turn On the Pump: Restart the pump.
  9. Add DE: After backwashing, you'll need to add fresh DE to the filter through the skimmer. The amount will vary depending on your filter size; consult your filter's manual.

Backwashing a Multiport Valve:

  1. Turn Off the Pump: Ensure the pump is turned off.
  2. Backwash Position: Push the handle down firmly and rotate the valve to the "Backwash" position. Ensure the handle is pressed down completely while rotating it.
  3. Turn On the Pump: Turn on the pump.
  4. Backwash: Let the water run until it clears (usually 2-3 minutes). Monitor the sight glass if your filter has one.
  5. Turn Off the Pump: Turn the pump off again.
  6. Rinse Position (Important): This step is crucial! Rotate the multiport valve to the "Rinse" position. This settles the DE and prevents it from returning to the pool.
  7. Turn On the Pump: Turn on the pump and let it run for about 30 seconds to a minute.
  8. Turn Off the Pump: Turn the pump off again.
  9. Return to Filter Position: Rotate the multiport valve back to the "Filter" position.
  10. Turn On the Pump: Restart the pump.
  11. Add DE: Add fresh DE to the filter through the skimmer. Refer to your filter's manual for the correct amount.

Important Considerations:

  • Frequency: Backwash your DE filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its normal operating pressure, or at least once a month.
  • DE Amount: Always consult your filter's manual for the correct amount of DE to add after backwashing. Too little DE will result in poor filtration, while too much can clog the filter.
  • Environment: Be mindful of where you're discharging the backwash water, as it contains DE and pool chemicals. Directing it to a sanitary sewer is preferable.
  • Safety: Always turn off the pump before changing valve positions to prevent damage and potential injury.

By following these steps, you can effectively backwash your DE pool filter, keeping your pool water clean and clear.
