How to Clean Pool Filter Media?

Published in Pool Maintenance 4 mins read

The best way to clean pool filter media depends on the type of filter you have, but typically involves hosing it down and occasionally using a cleaning solution. Here's a breakdown of how to clean the most common types of pool filter media:

Cleaning Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters require regular cleaning to maintain optimal performance.

  1. Remove the Cartridge: Turn off the pool pump and release any pressure in the filter tank. Carefully remove the cartridge from the filter housing.
  2. Hose it Down: Use a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle to spray down the filter pleats. Start at the top and work your way down, ensuring you remove all visible debris.
  3. Deep Clean (Optional): For a more thorough clean, soak the cartridge overnight in a solution of water and filter cleaner (specifically designed for pool filter cartridges). Alternatively, you can use a solution of one part water and one part vinegar. Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach, as they can damage the filter material.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: After soaking, rinse the cartridge again with a hose until all traces of the cleaning solution are gone.
  5. Reinstall: Reinstall the cleaned cartridge into the filter housing, ensuring it's properly seated. Close the filter tank and turn the pump back on.

Cleaning Sand Filters

Sand filters are cleaned through a process called backwashing.

  1. Backwash: Turn off the pool pump. Set the multiport valve to the "Backwash" position.
  2. Turn on the Pump: Turn the pump back on and let it run until the water in the sight glass (if equipped) runs clear. This typically takes 2-3 minutes.
  3. Rinse: Turn off the pump again. Set the multiport valve to the "Rinse" position.
  4. Turn on the Pump: Turn the pump back on and run it for about 30 seconds to resettle the sand bed.
  5. Return to Filter: Turn off the pump and set the multiport valve back to the "Filter" position. Turn the pump back on.
  6. Deep Cleaning (Optional): Periodically, consider using a sand filter cleaner to remove built-up oils and minerals. Follow the product instructions carefully.

Cleaning Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters

DE filters require backwashing and periodic grid cleaning.

  1. Backwash: Turn off the pool pump. Set the multiport valve to the "Backwash" position.
  2. Turn on the Pump: Turn the pump back on and let it run until the water in the sight glass runs clear.
  3. Turn off the Pump: Turn off the pump and set the multiport valve to the "Filter" position.
  4. Add DE: Add the appropriate amount of DE powder to the skimmer while the pump is running to recoat the filter grids.
  5. Grid Cleaning: At least twice a year, disassemble the filter and thoroughly clean the grids.
  6. Hose Down: Remove the filter grids and hose them down individually, removing all DE and debris.
  7. Soak (Optional): For stubborn buildup, soak the grids in a filter cleaning solution designed for DE filters.
  8. Reassemble: Reassemble the filter, ensuring all parts are properly aligned and secured.

General Tips for Cleaning Pool Filter Media

  • Frequency: A good general practice is to clean or backwash your filter at least once a month, or more frequently if your pool gets a lot of use or debris.
  • Pressure Gauge: Monitor your filter's pressure gauge. A rise of 8-10 psi above the normal operating pressure indicates it's time to clean the filter.
  • Safety: Always turn off the pool pump before performing any maintenance on the filter.
  • Manufacturer Instructions: Always refer to your filter's manufacturer's instructions for specific cleaning procedures and recommendations.
