How to Drain a Pool Using a Waste Setting?

Published in Pool Maintenance 3 mins read

Draining your pool using the waste setting on your multiport valve is a straightforward process that bypasses the filter, sending water directly out the backwash hose. Here's how to do it:

Steps to Drain Your Pool with the Waste Setting

  1. Turn off the Pump: Always start by turning off the pool pump to prevent damage to the system.

  2. Locate the Multiport Valve: This is usually located on your pool's filter system. It's a valve with multiple settings.

  3. Attach the Backwash Hose: Connect your backwash hose to the backwash port on the multiport valve. Make sure the other end of the hose is positioned where you want the water to drain (e.g., a drain, street gutter, or a safe area away from your property and neighbors). Always check local regulations regarding pool water drainage.

  4. Set the Valve to "Waste": Carefully turn the multiport valve handle to the "Waste" setting. Important: Never change the valve setting while the pump is running! This can severely damage the valve.

  5. Turn on the Pump: Turn the pool pump back on. The water will now be drawn from the pool and discharged through the backwash hose.

  6. Monitor the Water Level: Keep a close eye on the water level in your pool.

  7. Turn off the Pump When Desired Level is Reached: Once the water level reaches your desired level, immediately turn off the pump.

  8. Return the Valve to Normal Setting: Turn the multiport valve back to its normal "Filter" setting (or whatever setting you usually use). Again, do this only when the pump is OFF.

  9. Disconnect the Hose: Disconnect the backwash hose and store it properly.

Important Considerations

  • Drainage Location: Ensure the water is draining to a location where it won't cause damage or violate local regulations. Chlorinated water can harm plants and ecosystems. Dechlorinating the water before drainage might be necessary.
  • Pump Motor Overheating: Draining a large amount of water can take a long time. Monitor your pump's temperature; if it starts to overheat, turn it off to cool down before continuing.
  • Pool Liner: If you have a vinyl liner pool, be aware that completely draining the pool can cause the liner to shrink or detach, especially in hot weather. Never completely drain a vinyl liner pool unless absolutely necessary and you are prepared to potentially replace the liner. If draining below the skimmer is required for repairs, it is often best to have a professional do the work.
  • Well Water: If you fill your pool with well water, draining large amounts into the ground surrounding the well could contaminate it with chemicals.

Why Use the Waste Setting?

The "Waste" setting is used to drain the pool without sending the water through the filter. This is useful for:

  • Lowering water level quickly: After heavy rain, for example.
  • Draining for repairs: When you need to work on the pool or equipment.
  • Bypassing a damaged filter: If your filter is malfunctioning and you need to drain the pool.
  • Draining excessively dirty water: Such as water containing algae blooms or debris.
