How to Get Sand Out of a Pool Sand Filter?

Published in Pool Maintenance 3 mins read

The primary method for removing sand and debris from a pool sand filter is to backwash the filter.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Prepare for Backwashing: Ensure your backwash hose is properly connected and positioned to drain away from your pool and any sensitive areas (like gardens).

  2. Turn Off the Pump: Always turn off the pool pump before changing the multiport valve setting. This prevents damage to the valve and pump.

  3. Set the Multiport Valve to "Backwash": Locate the multiport valve on your sand filter. This valve controls the water flow direction. Turn the handle to the "Backwash" position.

  4. Turn the Pump On: Turn the pool pump back on.

  5. Backwash Until Clear: Allow the pump to run until the water visible through the sight glass on the filter (if equipped) runs clear. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes. Initially, the water will be cloudy with dirt, debris, and potentially sand.

  6. Turn Off the Pump: Once the water is clear, turn the pump off again.

  7. Set the Multiport Valve to "Rinse": Turn the multiport valve handle to the "Rinse" position. This step helps resettle the sand bed after backwashing.

  8. Turn the Pump On (Briefly): Run the pump in the "Rinse" position for about 30-60 seconds.

  9. Turn Off the Pump: Turn the pump off.

  10. Set the Multiport Valve to "Filter": Turn the multiport valve handle back to the "Filter" position. This is the normal operating position for your pool filter.

  11. Turn the Pump On: Turn the pump back on. Your pool filter is now back in operation.

Important Considerations:

  • Excessive Sand in the Pool: If you are finding excessive amounts of sand in your pool despite regular backwashing, it could indicate a damaged lateral (the internal fingers at the bottom of the filter that prevent sand from escaping) or a cracked filter tank. Inspect these components for damage and replace them as needed.
  • Sand Type: Ensure you are using the correct type of sand for your filter. Using the wrong type can lead to inefficient filtration and sand escaping into the pool.
  • Frequency: Backwash your sand filter regularly, typically when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI (pounds per square inch) above its normal operating pressure. This indicates that the filter is clogged with debris.
  • Water Loss: Backwashing removes water from the pool. Be sure to add water to compensate.

By following these steps, you can effectively remove sand and debris from your pool's sand filter, ensuring clean and clear pool water.
