How to Lower Water Level in Pool After Rain?

Published in Pool Maintenance 2 mins read

To lower the water level in your pool after rain, you typically need to pump the excess water out using your pool's filtration system in "waste" mode. Here's how:

Steps to Lower Your Pool's Water Level

  1. Turn off the pump: This is crucial for safety and to prevent damage to your equipment.

  2. Set the Filter Valve to "Waste": Locate the multiport valve on your pool filter. Important: Ensure you select "waste" and NOT "backwash." Backwashing cleans the filter, while the "waste" setting bypasses the filter and pumps water directly out.

  3. Open Valves on the Waste Line: Identify and open any valves connected to your waste line to allow water to flow freely.

  4. Disconnect Automatic Pool Cleaner: Remove your suction-side automatic pool cleaner and the vacuum plate from the skimmer box. This ensures that water is being drawn directly from the pool.

  5. Turn the Pump Back On: Once everything is set up correctly, turn your pool pump back on. The pump will now remove water from your pool and discharge it through the waste line.

  6. Monitor the Water Level: Keep a close eye on the water level and turn off the pump when it reaches your desired level. It's best to lower it to the middle of the skimmer opening.

  7. Return to Normal Operation: After reaching the desired water level, turn off the pump. Set the multiport valve back to "filter", close the waste line valves, reconnect your pool cleaner, and turn the pump back on for normal filtration.

By following these steps, you can effectively lower your pool's water level after heavy rainfall and ensure your pool operates efficiently.
