How to Prime a Sand Pool Pump?

Published in Pool Maintenance 3 mins read

Priming a sand pool pump involves removing air from the pump and filter system to allow water to flow correctly. Here's how to do it:

Steps to Prime Your Sand Pool Pump

  1. Turn Off the Pump: Safety first! Make sure the pool pump is completely turned off and disconnected from the power source to prevent any accidents.

  2. Set the Multiport Valve to Recirculate (or Bypass): This step is crucial. Changing the multiport valve setting allows water to bypass the sand filter during the priming process. This sends water directly back to the pool. This is generally the "Recirculate" or "Bypass" setting. The exact label may vary depending on your filter model.

  3. Open All Valves: Ensure all valves on the suction and return lines are fully open. This ensures that water can flow freely.

  4. Fill the Pump Basket Housing with Water: Locate the pump lid (usually a clear, screw-on or turnkey lid). Remove the lid and visually inspect the pump basket for debris. Clean out any leaves, twigs, or other obstructions. Then, using a hose or bucket, fill the pump basket housing completely with water. This is the key to priming.

  5. Replace the Pump Lid: Carefully replace the pump lid, ensuring the O-ring is properly seated and the lid is securely tightened. This creates an airtight seal, which is essential for the pump to prime correctly.

  6. Turn the Pump On: Turn the power back on to the pump. Observe the pump basket housing through the clear lid. You should see water moving. If the pump doesn't prime immediately (i.e., air bubbles are still present or the pump sounds strained), turn it off after a minute to prevent damage.

  7. Repeat if Necessary: If the pump doesn't prime on the first attempt, repeat steps 4-6. You may need to do this several times to fully remove all the air from the system. Sometimes gently tapping the pump housing can help dislodge air pockets.

  8. Return to Filter Mode: Once the pump is primed and water is flowing smoothly, turn the pump off again. Return the multiport valve to the "Filter" setting.

  9. Restart the Pump: Turn the pump back on. It should now be operating normally, filtering the pool water. Monitor the pressure gauge on the filter. If the pressure is too high, backwash the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Important Considerations:

  • Air Leaks: If you are having trouble priming your pump, check for air leaks in the suction lines, pump lid, and drain plugs. A small air leak can prevent the pump from creating suction.
  • Clogged Skimmer: A clogged skimmer can also prevent the pump from priming. Make sure the skimmer basket is clean.
  • Suction Line Blockage: A blockage in the suction line can also be the culprit.
  • Professional Help: If you are still unable to prime your pump after several attempts, consult a qualified pool service technician.
