How to Set Up a Pool Vacuum?

Published in Pool Maintenance 3 mins read

Setting up a pool vacuum is straightforward and essential for keeping your pool clean. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Setting Up Your Pool Vacuum

  1. Gather Your Equipment: You'll need a vacuum head, a vacuum hose, a telescopic pole, and your pool skimmer.

  2. Prepare the Vacuum Head, Hose, and Pole:

    • Attach the vacuum head to one end of the telescopic pole.
    • Connect one end of the vacuum hose to the vacuum head.
  3. Fill the Vacuum Hose with Water: This is crucial to remove air from the hose, which helps the vacuum function properly. Submerge the hose completely into the pool until it's full of water. Holding one end against a return jet can expedite the process. Alternatively, some hoses have a fitting to attach a garden hose.

  4. Connect the Vacuum Hose to the Skimmer:

    • Turn off your pool pump.
    • Remove the skimmer basket.
    • Some skimmers have a dedicated vacuum port. If yours does, attach the open end of the vacuum hose directly to this port.
    • If there's no dedicated port, you'll likely need a skimmer plate (also called a vacuum plate). Place the skimmer plate over the skimmer opening, then attach the hose to the hole in the skimmer plate. This creates a suction seal.
  5. Start the Pool Pump and Begin Vacuuming: Turn your pool pump back on. The vacuum should now be creating suction. Slowly and methodically move the vacuum head across the pool floor, overlapping each pass to ensure complete coverage.

  6. Empty the Skimmer Basket and Filter (as needed): As you vacuum, debris will accumulate in the skimmer basket and potentially your filter. Empty the skimmer basket as needed to maintain good suction. If your filter pressure increases significantly, backwash or clean the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  7. Disconnect and Clean Up: Once the pool is vacuumed, turn off the pump. Remove the vacuum hose from the skimmer, detach the hose from the vacuum head and pole, and empty the skimmer basket. Store the equipment in a dry place.

Troubleshooting

  • Loss of Suction: Check for air leaks in the hose connections or a clogged skimmer basket.
  • Vacuum Not Moving Easily: Ensure the hose is adequately filled with water. Also, check that the vacuum head wheels are moving freely.
  • Cloudy Water After Vacuuming: This may indicate that debris is bypassing your filter. Check for tears or damage to your filter element. A pool clarifier can help settle fine particles.
