A typical pool sand filter has six main settings that control the flow of water through the filter system. These settings are crucial for maintaining a clean and healthy pool. They are: filter, backwash, rinse, circulate, waste, and closed (or winterize).
Here's a breakdown of each setting:
-
Filter: This is the setting used for normal pool operation. Water is drawn from the pool, passes through the sand filter to remove debris, and is then returned to the pool. This is where the sand filter does its primary job of cleaning the water.
-
Backwash: This setting reverses the flow of water through the filter. It's used to clean the sand bed by flushing out accumulated dirt and debris. The dirty water is then discharged through the waste port. You should backwash when the filter pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI higher than the clean, starting pressure, or according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
-
Rinse: This setting is used after backwashing. It directs water through the filter in the forward direction but sends it out the waste port. This helps to settle the sand bed and prevent any remaining dirty water from returning to the pool when you switch back to the "Filter" setting. Run the rinse cycle for about 30 seconds.
-
Circulate (or Recirculate): This setting bypasses the sand filter entirely and simply circulates the water in the pool. This is useful for distributing chemicals quickly throughout the pool water or if you need to run the pump but don't want the water filtered (e.g., when adding DE powder to a DE filter, which sometimes can be done using a sand filter system if specific instructions are followed). Water is drawn from the pool and returned to the pool without going through the filter.
-
Waste (or Drain): This setting bypasses the filter and pumps water directly out through the waste port. It's used to lower the water level in the pool (e.g., after heavy rain) or to drain the pool completely. Water is drawn from the pool and discharged. Important: Be aware of local water restrictions when using the waste setting.
-
Closed (or Winterize or Test): This setting is also called winterize or test, depending on the valve and manufacturer. This setting will close the filter and/or allow you to test the pressure release valve on the filter. If using the setting to winterize you should drain the sand filter.
Understanding these settings and using them correctly is essential for proper pool maintenance and ensuring clean, safe swimming water. Refer to your specific sand filter's manual for detailed instructions and recommendations.
