How Do I Get Air Out Of My Pool Pump Basket?

Published in Pool Pump Air Removal 2 mins read

To get air out of your pool pump basket, you need to prime the pump by filling it with water and then bleed the air from the system once the pump is running.

Why Air Gets Into Your Pump

Air trapped in your pool pump prevents it from effectively drawing water from the pool. This can happen if the water level drops too low, there's a leak in the pipes before the pump, or the pump loses its "prime" (the water seal inside).

Step-by-Step Guide to Removing Air

Here's how to remove air from your pool pump basket:

  1. Turn Off the Power: Always start by switching off the pool pump's circuit breaker for safety.
  2. Open the Pump Lid: Carefully remove the lid from the top of the pump basket housing.
  3. Fill the Pump with Water: Use a garden hose or buckets to fill the pump with water until the water reaches the brim. This helps the pump regain its prime.
  4. Secure the Lid: Clean and inspect the lid's O-ring (lube if needed), then place the basket back in the pump (if removed) and tightly secure the lid.
  5. Restart the Pump: Turn the power back on at the breaker and switch the pump on.
  6. Release Air: Locate the air relief valve (usually on top of the pool filter). Open the air relief valve for about 30 seconds to release any air bubbles. You'll likely hear air hissing out, followed by water. Close the valve once only water comes out.

Important Considerations

  • Ensure your pool's water level is high enough (at least halfway up the skimmer opening) to prevent the pump from sucking in more air.
  • If air frequently appears in your pump, check all connections and the pump lid's O-ring for leaks.
  • If using the air relief valve on the filter doesn't completely clear the air, repeat the filling process in the pump basket.

Following these steps helps purge air from the pump system, allowing your pool equipment to function efficiently.
