Is Red Hair Russian?

Published in Population Genetics 1 min read

Yes, red hair is found among certain populations living within Russia.

While often associated with Western European heritage, red hair is not exclusive to this region. According to information from November 13, 2014, the Udmurts, an Uralic tribe residing in the northern Volga basin of Russia (located between Kazan and Perm), are a notable example.

The Udmurts are significant because they represent the only non-Western Europeans known to have a high incidence of red hair, with over 10% of their population exhibiting this trait. As the reference points out, the Udmurts are distinctly not of Celtic or German origin, highlighting the diverse genetic origins of red hair.

This indicates that while not a characteristic of the entire Russian population or ethnic Russian majority, red hair is present and even has a high prevalence within specific ethnic groups residing within the geographical boundaries of Russia.
