How to Sleep After IPL?

Published in Post-Treatment Care 3 mins read

To minimize swelling and promote healing after IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment, sleep with your head elevated using an extra pillow.

Following IPL treatment, your skin needs gentle care to recover properly. Proper sleep positioning and aftercare practices are crucial to avoid complications and maximize the benefits of the procedure. Here’s a more detailed guide:

Sleeping Position and Elevation

  • Elevate Your Head: The primary recommendation is to sleep with an extra pillow under your head. This elevation helps to minimize swelling in the treated area. Swelling is a common side effect of IPL, and gravity can exacerbate it if you lie flat.
  • Avoid Sleeping on Your Face: Try to sleep on your back to prevent any pressure or friction on the treated skin. This is especially important if the IPL was performed on your face.

General Aftercare Tips

  • Gentle Cleansing: Wash the treated area twice daily with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as it can irritate the skin. Pat the skin dry gently; do not rub.
  • Moisturize Regularly: Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. IPL can temporarily dry out the skin.
  • Avoid Irritants: Avoid using harsh skincare products, including those containing retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), for at least a week after the treatment, or as advised by your practitioner.
  • Sun Protection: Sun protection is critical after IPL. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours when outdoors. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat and seeking shade when possible. IPL makes your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • Avoid Heat and Strenuous Exercise: For the first 24-48 hours, avoid activities that can cause you to sweat excessively or expose you to heat, such as saunas, hot tubs, and intense workouts. Increased blood flow can exacerbate swelling and discomfort.
  • Avoid Picking or Scratching: It's common to experience some minor itching or flaking after IPL. Resist the urge to pick or scratch the treated area, as this can lead to irritation, infection, or scarring.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated and aids in the healing process.

By following these guidelines, you can promote optimal healing and enjoy the best possible results from your IPL treatment. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as severe pain, blistering, or signs of infection, consult with your dermatologist or IPL provider immediately.
