How to Edit a Custom Path in PowerPoint

Published in PowerPoint Animation Editing 4 mins read

Editing a custom animation path in PowerPoint allows you to refine how an object moves on your slide. The most direct way to modify a custom path is by using the "Edit Points" feature.

To change a custom path once you've drawn it, you need to Control+click or right-click the custom path and click Edit Points.

Understanding Custom Paths in PowerPoint

In PowerPoint, a "custom path" typically refers to an animation path you've drawn to define the movement of an object (like text boxes, shapes, or images) on a slide. Unlike standard animation paths (like lines or arcs), custom paths give you complete control over the object's trajectory. However, drawing the perfect path on the first try can be tricky, which is why editing is essential.

Steps to Edit a Custom Path

Once you have applied a custom path animation to an object:

  1. Select the object that has the custom path animation applied.
  2. Go to the Animations tab on the PowerPoint ribbon. The custom path will usually appear as a line on your slide indicating the object's movement.
  3. Locate the custom path line on the slide. It might be represented by a dotted line or a specific color depending on your PowerPoint version and settings.
  4. Control+click (on Mac) or right-click (on Windows) directly on the custom path line itself.
  5. From the context menu that appears, select Edit Points.
Example: Right-clicking a custom path to reveal the Edit Points option.

Using the "Edit Points" Feature

Clicking "Edit Points" transforms the custom path into a series of small black squares. These squares are the "points" (also called vertices) that define the shape of the path.

  • Dragging Points: You can click and drag any of these black squares to reshape the path segment connected to that point.
  • Adding Points: To add a new point, click anywhere on the path line between two existing points. A new black square will appear, which you can then drag.
  • Deleting Points: Control+click or right-click on an existing point and select Delete Point from the menu.
  • Adjusting Curves: When you select a point that is part of a curve, blue handles (called Bezier handles) will appear. Dragging these handles allows you to adjust the curvature of the path segment entering or exiting that point.
  • Changing Point Type: Control+click or right-click on a point to change its type (e.g., to make a smooth point a sharp corner or vice-versa). Options often include:
    • Smooth Point: Creates a smooth curve through the point with aligned handles.
    • Straight Point: Creates a sharp corner. Handles move independently.
    • Corner Point: Handles move independently, allowing different curvatures on either side of the point.
Common Edit Points Actions
Action How-To

Tips for Refining Your Custom Path

  • Zoom In: For precise editing, zoom in on the slide to get a better view of the path and its points.
  • Use Bezier Handles: Master the use of Bezier handles for creating natural-looking curves.
  • Test Frequently: After making adjustments, preview the animation to see how the changes affect the object's movement.
  • Simplify: Sometimes, deleting unnecessary points can make the path smoother and easier to manage.

By utilizing the "Edit Points" feature, you can significantly refine the custom animation paths in your PowerPoint presentations, ensuring objects move exactly where and how you intend.
