How to Add Confetti to PowerPoint

Published in PowerPoint Animation Effects 5 mins read

Adding confetti to your PowerPoint presentation can bring a festive or celebratory feel to your slides using a combination of shapes and animations. While there isn't a built-in "confetti" feature, you can easily create a convincing effect using PowerPoint's animation tools.

Creating Confetti Shapes

The first step is to create the visual elements that will serve as your confetti.

  1. Insert Shapes: Go to the Insert tab and click Shapes. Choose small shapes like circles, squares, or even tiny stars or diamonds.
  2. Draw and Duplicate: Draw one small shape on your slide.
  3. Colorize: Select the shape and go to the Shape Format tab. Use the Shape Fill option to give it a vibrant color.
  4. Create Variety: Duplicate the shape multiple times (Ctrl+D or Cmd+D) and change the colors of the duplicates to create a mix of colors, like real confetti.
  5. Scatter: Arrange these small, colorful shapes on your slide where you want the confetti effect to occur (e.g., at the top for a falling effect, or clustered in the center for a burst).

Animating the Confetti

Once your shapes are ready, you need to animate them to simulate movement. A common approach is to combine a movement animation with a rotation animation.

  1. Select Shapes: Select all the small shapes you want to animate as confetti.
  2. Apply Movement Animation: Go to the Animations tab. Click Add Animation.
    • For falling confetti, Motion Paths (like a straight line downwards) or entrance effects like Fly In (from the top) or Float In work well.
    • For a bursting effect, entrance effects like Zoom or Grow & Turn can be a starting point, possibly combined with custom motion paths moving outwards.
  3. Apply Rotation Animation: With the shapes still selected (or selecting the objects whose movement you just animated in the Animation Pane), click Add Animation again. Under Emphasis effects, choose Spin. This adds rotation to the movement.

Customizing Animation Settings

To make the animation look like realistic confetti and incorporate the details from the reference, you need to adjust the animation settings in the Animation Pane.

  1. Open Animation Pane: On the Animations tab, click Animation Pane. This shows a list of all animations on your slide.
  2. Adjust Timing and Start:
    • Select the animation entries for your confetti shapes in the Animation Pane.
    • Right-click on the selected animations and choose Timing... or use the dropdown arrow next to an animation entry and select Timing....
    • Under Start, choose With Previous. This ensures the confetti animation begins automatically when the previous action (like the slide appearing or another animation finishing) occurs. The reference specifically states, "Make sure it starts with previous."
    • Set the Duration for the movement animation (e.g., Fly In, Motion Path) to control how fast or slow the confetti falls or moves. This will depend on the desired effect.
  3. Configure Spin Animation:
    • In the Animation Pane, find the Spin animation entries for your confetti shapes.
    • Right-click on the Spin animation entry and select Effect Options....
    • In the Effect Options dialog box, find the Amount setting. Change it to 360° (Full Spin). The reference mentions, "Make sure the rotation angle is one full turn so 360 degrees".
    • Set the Duration for the Spin animation. The reference provides a specific duration: "Give it a duration of 2 seconds." Set the duration here to 2 seconds.
    • Go to the Timing tab within the Effect Options dialog box. Ensure the Start is also set to With Previous if you didn't do it in step 2.
    • On the Effect tab, under Settings, look for Smooth Start and Smooth End. Deactivate these options by making sure the checkboxes are unchecked or the values are set to 0 seconds. The reference states, "Make sure smooth start and then are deactivated."

Tips for a More Realistic Effect

  • Vary Settings: Don't make all confetti pieces animate exactly the same way. Select small groups or even individual pieces and give them slightly different durations, delays, or rotation speeds (e.g., some spin faster, some slower).
  • Add Fades: Consider adding a Fade Out exit animation to the confetti pieces so they disappear gradually instead of abruptly stopping. Set this to start After Previous relative to the movement/spin animation.
  • Layering: Create multiple layers of confetti with different starting positions and animation timings to create depth.
  • Adjust Paths: If using motion paths, draw slightly varied paths for different confetti pieces to make the movement less uniform.

By combining colorful shapes with movement and spin animations and customizing the settings as described, including ensuring the spin animation starts With Previous, has a Duration of 2 seconds, a rotation of 360 degrees (One Full Turn), and both Smooth Start and Smooth End are deactivated, you can create a dynamic confetti effect in your PowerPoint slides.
