How Do I Reorder Animations in PowerPoint?

Published in PowerPoint Animations 3 mins read

To reorder animations in PowerPoint, you use the Animation Pane to click and drag the animation effects into your desired sequence.

Adjusting the order of animations on a slide allows you to control the flow of information and visual elements during your presentation. PowerPoint provides a dedicated tool, the Animation Pane, specifically for managing and reordering these effects.

Using the Animation Pane to Change Animation Order

The primary method for changing the order of animations is directly within the Animation Pane. This pane lists all animation effects applied to objects on the current slide in their current sequence.

Steps to Reorder Animations:

  1. Open the Animation Pane: Navigate to the Animations tab on the PowerPoint ribbon and click the Animation Pane button. This opens a sidebar pane, usually on the right side of your screen, listing all animations on the current slide.
  2. Locate the Animation: In the Animation Pane, find the animation effect you want to move. Each effect is listed with the name of the object it applies to and the type of animation (e.g., "Rectangle 5: Appear," "Picture 2: Fade").
  3. Click and Drag: Click and hold the animation effect you want to reorder in the list.
  4. Move the Animation: Drag it upward or downward within the list to position it in the appropriate position. As you drag, a thin, red horizontal line shows you where you can place the effect in the list. Release the mouse button when the red line is where you want the animation to appear in the sequence.
  5. Verify Order: The list in the Animation Pane now reflects the new order. The numbers displayed next to the animated objects on your slide will also update to show the new sequence.

Visualizing the Change

Imagine you have three animations listed as:

  • 1 - Heading: Fly In
  • 2 - Bullet 1: Appear
  • 3 - Bullet 2: Appear

If you drag "Bullet 2: Appear" above "Bullet 1: Appear", the new order in the Animation Pane (and on the slide) will become:

Original Order Animation New Order (After dragging Bullet 2 up)
1 Heading: Fly In 1
2 Bullet 1: Appear 3
3 Bullet 2: Appear 2

Note: The numbers on the slide next to the objects update automatically to reflect the order shown in the Animation Pane.

Practical Tips

  • Complex Slides: For slides with many animations, the Animation Pane is essential for managing the sequence.
  • Preview: Use the Preview button on the Animations tab or the Play button within the Animation Pane to see how your reordered animations will play during the slideshow.
  • Grouping: Animations on the same object can be grouped (e.g., "Start after Previous"), but you can still reorder the main steps for different objects or initial animations on the same object using the drag-and-drop method.

By mastering the drag-and-drop functionality in the Animation Pane, you gain full control over the timing and sequence of every animated element in your PowerPoint presentation.
