How do I ungroup a vector image in PowerPoint?

Published in PowerPoint Graphics 2 mins read

To ungroup a vector image (or any grouped object) in PowerPoint, follow these simple steps:

  1. Select the Group: Click on the vector image or the group of objects you want to ungroup. Make sure the entire group is selected.

  2. Access the Ungroup Option: The location of the "Ungroup" command depends on whether you are working with standard shapes/objects or a picture (like an imported SVG). Here's how to find it in both scenarios:

    • For Shapes and Objects: Go to the Drawing Tools Format tab (this tab appears when you select a shape or drawing object). In the Arrange group, click Group, and then select Ungroup from the dropdown menu.

    • For Pictures (including SVGs): Go to the Picture Tools Format tab (this tab appears when you select a picture). In the Arrange group, click Group, and then select Ungroup from the dropdown menu.

  3. Ungroup! Clicking "Ungroup" will separate the grouped objects into their individual components, allowing you to edit them independently.

Important Considerations:

  • Double-Grouping: Sometimes, objects are grouped within groups. If ungrouping doesn't fully separate everything, repeat the steps above until all elements are ungrouped.
  • Vector vs. Raster: These instructions apply to vector images (like SVGs) or groups of PowerPoint shapes. If you've inserted a raster image (like a JPG or PNG), and it's not grouped with anything, there's nothing to "ungroup." You'd need to edit the raster image in a separate image editing program.
  • SVG Conversion: When you insert an SVG into PowerPoint, it's automatically converted into editable PowerPoint shapes. This allows you to ungroup it and manipulate the individual elements.

By following these steps, you can easily ungroup vector images and other grouped elements in PowerPoint, giving you complete control over their individual components.
