How do I change a master layout in PowerPoint?

Published in PowerPoint Layouts 3 mins read

To change a master layout in PowerPoint, you first need to access the Slide Master view and select the specific layout you wish to modify.

Accessing and Selecting a Master Layout

Changing a master layout involves modifying its structure, appearance, and formatting within the dedicated Slide Master view. Here are the steps to get there and select the layout you want to work on:

  1. Navigate to the View tab on the PowerPoint ribbon.
  2. In the Master Views group, click the Slide Master command. This action opens the Slide Master view, which is a special editing mode.
  3. Once in the Slide Master view, look at the thumbnail pane located on the left side of the window. This pane displays a hierarchy of thumbnails.
  4. The Slide Master itself is always the very top thumbnail in this pane. Beneath the Slide Master thumbnail, you will see all the individual Slide Layouts associated with your presentation's theme.
  5. Pick the layout thumbnail from this pane that you want to change. It's often helpful to select the layout that has the closest arrangement of placeholders to how you want your slide to eventually look.
  6. Clicking a layout thumbnail selects it, displaying it in the main editing area on the right.

Modifying the Selected Layout

Once you have selected a specific slide layout in the Slide Master view, you can then make your desired changes. These changes can include:

  • Adding, deleting, resizing, or repositioning placeholders for text, images, charts, etc.
  • Changing default fonts, sizes, colors, and formatting for text placeholders.
  • Adjusting background styles, colors, or images.
  • Adding logos, footers, or other persistent elements.
  • Modifying the theme colors, fonts, or effects associated with that layout.

Any changes you make to a slide layout in this view will affect all slides in your presentation that currently use that specific layout.

Note on Slide Master vs. Layouts

Remember that the main Slide Master at the top controls the overall theme and formatting for the entire presentation. Changes made to the main Slide Master cascade down to all the Slide Layouts and therefore to all slides using those layouts. The individual Slide Layouts below it define the specific arrangements of content for different types of slides (e.g., Title Slide, Title and Content, Two Content, etc.). When you want to change the arrangement or specific formatting for just one type of slide, you modify its corresponding Slide Layout.
