How do I change theme colors in PowerPoint?

Published in PowerPoint Themes 3 mins read

Changing theme colors in PowerPoint allows you to quickly update the look and feel of your entire presentation to match your brand or a specific aesthetic. This is typically done through the Slide Master view.

Understanding Theme Colors

Theme colors are a predefined set of colors that PowerPoint uses for text, backgrounds, accents, and hyperlinks throughout your presentation. By changing the theme colors, you can instantly apply a new color scheme across all slides based on that theme.

Steps to Change Theme Colors

The most effective way to change theme colors and ensure consistency is by modifying the theme within the Slide Master view, as highlighted in the reference.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Access Slide Master View: Open your presentation. Go to the View tab on the ribbon and click Slide Master in the Master Views group.
  2. Select a Layout (Optional but Recommended): While theme colors apply globally to the theme, you can select a specific slide layout in the left-hand pane (under the main Slide Master) to see how the color changes will affect that layout in the main window.
  3. Locate Color Options: With the Slide Master tab active, look for the Background group.
  4. Choose or Create Colors: Click the Colors button within the Background group. A dropdown menu will appear.
    • Choose Predefined Schemes: Select from a list of built-in color schemes provided by PowerPoint. These schemes offer various combinations of colors.
    • Create Custom Colors: If the predefined options don't meet your needs, select Create New Theme Colors at the bottom of the dropdown menu. This opens a dialog box where you can customize each color element (Text/Background - Dark 1, Light 1; Accent 1-6; Hyperlink; Followed Hyperlink).
  5. Apply Changes: Once you select a predefined scheme or save your custom scheme, the theme colors will update across the main Slide Master and all associated layouts, and consequently, your presentation slides that use this theme.
  6. Close Slide Master: After making your changes, click Close Master View on the Slide Master tab to return to your normal slide editing view.

Your presentation should now reflect the new theme colors you selected or created.

Why Change Theme Colors?

  • Branding: Ensure your presentations align with your company's or organization's brand guidelines.
  • Consistency: Maintain a uniform look across all slides effortlessly.
  • Visual Appeal: Easily experiment with different color palettes to find the most effective and appealing design for your content.
  • Efficiency: Update colors globally without manually changing every element on every slide.

By using the Slide Master view and the dedicated "Colors" option, you gain powerful control over your presentation's visual identity.
