How to Put On a Disposable Gown

Published in PPE Donning 2 mins read

Putting on a disposable gown correctly is a crucial step in personal protective equipment (PPE) application to help prevent the spread of contaminants.

Steps for Donning a Disposable Gown

Properly donning a disposable gown ensures maximum protection. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Inspect the Gown: Before putting it on, quickly check the gown for any tears or damage.
  2. Unfold the Gown: Hold the gown at the neck ties and let it unfold, avoiding touching the outside of the gown.
  3. Insert Arms: Slide your arms into the sleeves one at a time.
  4. Pull Over Shoulders: Pull the gown up and over your shoulders, covering your body completely.
  5. Secure the Neck: Close the gown at the collar, typically by tying the neck ties securely. This ensures the gown stays in place at the top.
  6. Secure the Back: Bring the gown edges together at the back and tie the waist ties. If the gown doesn't wrap fully, it should still cover your back as much as possible.
  7. Ensure Wrist Coverage: Make sure the cuffs of the gown come down to or slightly over your wrists. The back of your wrists should remain covered by the gown to protect this area.
  8. Position Hands: Once the gown is on and secured, keep your hands in front of your chest. This is important so you don't accidentally touch anything before performing a task and also helps ensure the gown doesn't slip back down.

Following these steps helps ensure that the gown provides the intended barrier protection during procedures or tasks where it is required.
