During pregnancy, a woman's nipples undergo several changes, primarily in color and size.
Changes to Nipples During Pregnancy:
-
Darkening: The areola (the area around the nipple) will likely darken in color. This is one of the most noticeable changes.
-
Size Increase: Both the nipple and areola tend to increase in size throughout the pregnancy.
-
Veins Become More Visible: The veins on the breasts, including those around the nipples, may become more prominent.
-
Montgomery's Tubercles: These are small bumps on the areola that may become more noticeable. These glands secrete an oily substance that lubricates and protects the nipples.
-
Stretch Marks: Stretch marks may appear on the breasts, including around the nipples, as the breasts grow.
-
Colostrum Leakage: From around 16 weeks, the breasts are ready to produce milk. Some women may experience leakage of colostrum, a thick, yellowish fluid, from their nipples. This is normal.
These changes are due to hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, preparing the breasts for breastfeeding.
