In which month does vomiting start in pregnancy?

Published in Pregnancy Health 1 min read

Vomiting in pregnancy, often called "morning sickness," typically starts around the second month of pregnancy, specifically around 5 weeks of gestation.

While "morning sickness" is the common term, nausea and vomiting can occur at any time of the day or night. The symptoms tend to be most pronounced around 9 weeks of pregnancy and usually subside between 16 to 18 weeks. However, for some women, it can last longer or even throughout the entire pregnancy.

Factors that might affect when vomiting starts and its severity during pregnancy include:

  • Hormone levels: Rapidly changing hormone levels, particularly human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), are thought to contribute to nausea and vomiting.
  • Individual sensitivity: Some women are simply more susceptible to pregnancy-related nausea.
  • Multiple pregnancies: Women carrying twins or more are more likely to experience severe morning sickness.

It is important to consult with a healthcare provider if the vomiting is excessive, prevents you from keeping food or liquids down, or if you experience signs of dehydration.
