SMU pregnancy refers to testing for pregnancy using Second Morning Urine.
Understanding SMU and Pregnancy Tests
Many home pregnancy test instructions advise using first morning urine (FMU) for testing. However, some individuals advocate for using SMU, or second morning urine, as it may offer certain advantages in detecting pregnancy hormones.
Why SMU?
- Concentration of hCG: Both FMU and SMU are more concentrated than urine collected later in the day. This is because you've typically gone several hours without drinking fluids, allowing the pregnancy hormone, human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), to become more concentrated in your urine.
- An alternative if you miss FMU: If you happen to miss testing with your first morning urine, SMU is a viable alternative for a more concentrated sample.
How to collect SMU
- First Morning: Collect and discard your first urine of the day.
- Hydrate: Drink a normal amount of fluids after your first urination.
- Second Urination: Wait a few hours, then collect your second urine of the day. This is your SMU sample.
- Test: Use the SMU sample with your home pregnancy test according to the test's instructions.
BFP Meaning
If the test results show a "BFP," it stands for "Big Fat Positive," indicating a positive pregnancy test result, typically shown as two lines or a plus sign, depending on the test brand.
