How do I change frame position in Premiere Pro?

Published in Premiere Positioning 2 mins read

You can change the position of a clip within your video frame in Adobe Premiere Pro using the Effect Controls panel. Here's how:

Using the Effect Controls Panel

  1. Select Your Clip: In your timeline, select the clip you want to reposition.

  2. Open Effect Controls: Navigate to the 'Effect Controls' panel (usually located above the timeline or in its own panel). If it's not visible, go to Window > Effect Controls.

  3. Locate 'Motion': Within the Effect Controls panel, you'll find the 'Motion' dropdown. Expand it to see its settings.

  4. Adjust Position:

    • The 'Position' property consists of two values:

      • The first value controls the horizontal (x) position. Adjusting this value moves your clip left or right.
      • The second value controls the vertical (y) position. Adjusting this moves your clip up or down.
    • You can either:

    • Click and drag the numerical value itself to change it.

    • Click in the number box and enter a precise value.

    • Use the arrows next to the number box for incremental adjustments.

Practical Tips

  • Moving a clip right: Increase the first (x) value in the 'Position' property to shift your clip to the right.
  • Moving a clip left: Decrease the first (x) value in the 'Position' property to shift your clip to the left.
  • Moving a clip up: Decrease the second (y) value in the 'Position' property to move the clip upward.
  • Moving a clip down: Increase the second (y) value in the 'Position' property to move the clip downward.
  • Keyframing: If you want the clip position to change dynamically over time, you can set keyframes on the 'Position' property. Click the stopwatch icon next to 'Position' and then set keyframes at different points in your clip, each with a different position value. This will animate the movement of your clip.

By adjusting these 'Position' values, you can precisely place your clips anywhere within the video frame, as shown in the reference.
