How do you add gold foil to prints?

Published in Printmaking Techniques 1 min read

Adding gold foil to prints generally involves a heat transfer process using a laminator and toner-based prints. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Print your design: Ensure your design is printed using a toner-based printer. Inkjet prints will not work. The toner acts as the adhesive for the foil.

  2. Prepare the foil: Place a sheet of gold foil (or other color foil) over the printed design, ensuring the foil side that will adhere is facing the toner. Be careful not to touch the foil directly as oils from your fingers can affect the adhesion.

  3. Laminate: Run the print with the foil through a laminator. The heat from the laminator will cause the foil to adhere to the toner. Multiple passes may be required.

  4. Cool and Peel: Let the laminated print cool down for a few seconds. Then, carefully peel away the foil. The gold foil should now be adhered to the areas where the toner was printed, revealing your foiled design.
