Procreate doesn't have a single "default" brush size that applies to every brush or resets each time you open the app. Instead, Procreate remembers the last size you used for each individual brush. However, if you want to be able to use a brush at a size larger than its current maximum limit, you need to adjust the brush's properties.
Increasing the Maximum Brush Size Limit
To change the upper limit of how large a specific brush can be, you need to edit its settings in the Brush Studio. This is necessary if the size slider on the sidebar doesn't go up to the size you need.
Here are the steps to increase the maximum size for a brush:
- Open the Brush Library: Tap the Brush icon (it looks like a paintbrush) in the top right corner of your Procreate interface.
- Select the Brush: In the Brush Library panel that appears, navigate through your brush sets and tap the brush you wish to modify. This will open the Brush Studio for that specific brush.
- Go to Properties: In the Brush Studio settings menu (typically located on the left side), scroll down the list of tabs and tap on Properties.
- Adjust Maximum Size: Within the Properties tab, find the section labeled Brush Properties. Here, you will see a slider for Maximum Size. Drag this slider to the right to increase the highest possible size percentage for this brush.
By increasing the Maximum Size slider, you expand the range of sizes available to you for that specific brush when using the main size slider on your canvas.
Troubleshooting: If Size Adjustment is Limited
According to one reference, if you find that your brush appears to be at its maximum possible size, and simply increasing the slider in Properties doesn't seem sufficient, you might try an additional step:
- Go to the Stroke Path tab within the Brush Studio.
- Locate and adjust the Spacing property. The reference suggests adjusting it by approximately 5 units.
- Return to the Properties tab and re-evaluate the Maximum Size slider.
Note: Changing the Spacing property significantly impacts the appearance of your brush stroke, potentially making it dotted or textured at higher values. Use this adjustment cautiously.
Understanding Procreate's Brush Size Memory
As mentioned earlier, Procreate remembers the last size setting used for each brush individually. When you select a brush, it automatically defaults to the size you last set it to. To effectively change the "default" size for a brush for future use, simply select the brush, set the size you want using the sidebar slider, and then use the brush. Procreate will recall this size the next time you select it.
There is currently no feature in Procreate to set a global default size that applies to all brushes when you start a new canvas or switch between brushes.
