How do you import shapes into Procreate brush?

Published in Procreate Brushes 2 mins read

To import shapes into a Procreate brush, you'll essentially be tapping the shapes directly within Procreate's Source Library or importing them. Here's how:

  1. Access the Brush Studio: Open Procreate and tap on the brush icon to open the Brush Library. Select the brush you want to edit, or create a new one. Tap on the brush again to open the Brush Studio.

  2. Navigate to Shape Source: In the Brush Studio, select the "Shape" tab.

  3. Import from Source Library: Procreate's Source Library contains over 150 shapes. Simply tap on the shape you want to use to select it. Tap Done in the Brush Studio to save your changes. The new shape will be applied to your brush.

  4. Import Custom Shapes: If you want to use a shape that isn't in the Source Library, you can tap "Import" at the top right (or "Import a Source" depending on the Procreate version) of the "Shape" tab. This allows you to import a shape from your iPad's Photos, Files, or Clipboard. The shape must be a black and white image (.jpg, .png, .gif, or .tiff). The black areas will be what your brush paints, and the white areas will be transparent.

  5. Adjust Shape Settings: After importing or selecting a shape, you can adjust various settings like "Shape Filtering," "Shape Behavior," and "Grain Source" within the Brush Studio's "Shape" tab to fine-tune how the shape interacts within your brush. Experiment with settings like rotation, scattering, and jitter to create unique effects.

In summary, importing shapes into your Procreate brushes is done either by directly selecting them from the built-in Source Library or by importing a black and white image to define the shape. Remember to experiment with the brush settings to achieve your desired effect.
