How to Import a File into Procreate?

Published in Procreate File Import 3 mins read

Importing a file into Procreate allows you to bring existing artwork, images, or other compatible documents onto your canvas for further editing or reference. The process is straightforward and utilizes your iPad's built-in file system.

To import a file into Procreate, you will primarily use the Import function found in the Gallery. This opens your device's file browser, allowing you to select the desired document.

Step-by-Step Guide to Importing

Here's the simple method to import a file directly into your Procreate Gallery:

  1. Open Procreate and navigate to your Gallery. This is the main screen where you see all your artwork.
  2. Look at the top right corner of the Gallery screen. You will find several options, including Select, Import, and Photo.
  3. Tap Import in the top right Gallery menu. This action will open the Files app, which is the native file management system on your iPad.
  4. The Files app allows you to browse locations where your files are stored, such as iCloud Drive, On My iPad, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.
  5. Navigate to the folder where your stored images or compatible files are located. Browse through the folders until you find the file you want to import.
  6. Tap on the file to import it. Once you tap the file, Procreate will automatically import it and create a new canvas in your Gallery containing the imported content.

What File Types Can You Import?

Procreate is compatible with a wide range of file formats. While the exact list can vary slightly with updates, commonly supported types include:

  • Procreate (.procreate): Import other Procreate files to work on them.
  • PSD (.psd): Photoshop documents, often retaining layers.
  • JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg): Common image format.
  • PNG (.png): Image format that supports transparency.
  • TIFF (.tif or .tiff): High-quality image format.
  • GIF (.gif): Animated image format (often imports as a static image or layers).
  • PDF (.pdf): Portable Document Format.
  • MP4 (.mp4): Video format (can be imported as a series of frames or a single frame).
  • HEVC (.mov): High-Efficiency Video Coding.

When you tap Import, the Files app will typically show you files that Procreate can open.

Importing Directly onto an Existing Canvas

Sometimes, you might want to add a file into an artwork you are already working on. This is done differently:

  1. Open the canvas where you want to import the file.
  2. Tap the Wrench icon (Actions menu) in the top left corner.
  3. Go to the Add tab.
  4. Tap Insert a file. This will also open the Files app, allowing you to select a file from your stored locations.
  5. Tap the file you wish to import. It will be added as a new layer on your current canvas.
  6. Alternatively, you can tap Insert a photo in the same menu to directly import an image from your iPad's Photos app.

Both methods give you flexibility depending on whether you want the imported file to become a new standalone artwork or a layer within an existing one.
