How Do I Edit a Selected Area in Procreate?

Published in Procreate Selection 2 mins read

To begin editing a specific area in Procreate, you first need to select it. One method for selecting areas, as referenced, is using the Automatic selection mode. This tool helps you quickly select regions based on color and tone, similar to how the ColorDrop Threshold works.

Here’s how to use the Automatic selection mode to define the area you want to edit:

Using the Automatic Selection Tool

  1. Activate the Selection Tool: Tap the 'S' icon (Selection tool) at the top left of your Procreate interface.
  2. Choose Automatic Mode: In the toolbar that appears at the bottom of the screen, ensure Automatic is selected.
  3. Tap to Select: Tap the area you want to select on your canvas.
    • Your selected area will immediately show inverted colors.
  4. Adjust the Selection Area: To refine the selection boundary and include more or less of the surrounding similar colors, drag left-and-right to adjust the area of the selection.
    • Dragging right will increase the threshold, selecting a wider range of similar colors.
    • Dragging left will decrease the threshold, narrowing the selection to colors closer to where you initially tapped.

Refining Your Selection

The ability to drag left and right after tapping in Automatic mode is crucial for fine-tuning exactly which pixels are included in your selected area before you proceed with any editing actions like filling, transforming, or applying adjustments. This gesture allows you to interactively control the sensitivity of the Automatic selection tool.

Once your area is selected and refined using this method, Procreate enables various editing actions that will only affect the pixels within the selected boundary.
