How to Open Procreate File in Procreate Dreams?

Published in Procreate Workflow 3 mins read

You can't directly "open" a .procreate file as a project file within Procreate Dreams. Instead, you import artwork from your Procreate Gallery into an existing Procreate Dreams project timeline. This allows you to use your illustrations, paintings, or individual layers created in Procreate within your animation or motion graphics project in Dreams.

The process primarily involves using the Split View feature on your iPad to have both apps open side-by-side and then dragging and dropping content.

Steps to Import Procreate Artwork into Procreate Dreams

Bringing your Procreate creations into Procreate Dreams is a straightforward drag-and-drop process using iPad's multitasking capabilities.

Here are the detailed steps:

  1. Open Procreate Dreams: Launch the Procreate Dreams app and open or create the project you want to import into.
  2. Activate Split View:
    • Tap the Multitasking button (usually three small dots) located at the top of the screen in Procreate Dreams.
    • From the options that appear, tap the Split View layout icon.
  3. Choose Procreate: Your screen will split. You'll be prompted to choose the second app. Select Procreate from your list of apps to open it alongside Procreate Dreams.
  4. Locate Artwork in Procreate: In the Procreate side of the screen, navigate through your Gallery to find the artwork (canvas or layers) you wish to import.
  5. Drag and Drop onto Timeline:
    • Tap and hold the artwork thumbnail in your Procreate Gallery.
    • Drag the artwork from Procreate onto the Timeline area in your Procreate Dreams project.
    • Lift your finger to drop the artwork.

Your Procreate artwork will now appear as a layer or group of layers on the Procreate Dreams timeline, ready for you to animate or manipulate within your project.

What Gets Imported?

When you drag a Procreate canvas into Dreams, the result can vary slightly depending on the artwork structure:

  • A single-layer artwork will often import as a single layer in Dreams.
  • Artwork with multiple layers may import as a group, preserving the layer structure.

Experimenting with different types of Procreate files will show you how Dreams interprets and imports them.
