Vaseline is the brand name for Petroleum Jelly. The product was originally called "Wonder Jelly" and was later rebranded as Vaseline in 1870 by Robert Augustus Chesebrough, a chemist from New York. He combined the German word for water "wasser" with the Greek word for oil "elaion" to create the name Vaseline.
While many people use "Vaseline" as a generic term for petroleum jelly, it is actually a trademark owned by Unilever.
