What does LCD stand for in the context of projectors?

LCD in the context of projectors stands for Liquid-Crystal Display.

LCD projectors utilize this technology to project images onto a screen. They work by passing light, typically from a metal-halide lamp, through a series of dichroic filters or a prism. This separates the light into its red, green, and blue components. Each component then passes through its own respective LCD panel (usually a polysilicon panel). These panels control the amount of light that passes through each pixel, effectively creating the image. Finally, the light from the three panels is combined and projected through a lens onto the screen.

In essence, the LCD panels act as tiny valves, controlling the color and intensity of light for each pixel in the projected image.
