How do I adjust a pressure pump switch?

Published in Pump Maintenance 3 mins read

Adjusting a pressure pump switch generally involves altering the cut-in (turn-on) and cut-out (turn-off) pressure settings of your water pump. Here's a general guide, but always consult your pump and switch's specific manual for detailed instructions.

Steps to Adjust a Pressure Switch:

  1. Safety First: Turn off the power to the pump at the circuit breaker.

  2. Locate the Pressure Switch: The pressure switch is typically a small, box-shaped device located on or near the pressure tank.

  3. Remove the Cover: Carefully remove the cover of the pressure switch. It's often held in place by screws or a snap-fit mechanism.

  4. Identify the Adjustment Nuts: Inside, you'll usually find two nuts on a central rod. One controls the overall pressure range, and the other controls the differential (the difference between the cut-in and cut-out pressures).

  5. Adjusting the Overall Pressure Range (Cut-Out):

    • Turning the Larger Nut: Typically, there is a larger nut located on the main spring.
    • Turning Clockwise: Increasing the pressure. This raises both the cut-in and cut-out pressure.
    • Turning Counter-Clockwise: Decreasing the pressure. This lowers both the cut-in and cut-out pressure.
      • Small adjustments are recommended.
  6. Adjusting the Differential (Pressure Difference):

    • Turning the Smaller Nut: A smaller nut, typically located on a smaller spring.
    • Turning Clockwise: Increases the differential. This means the pump will run longer as the pressure difference between when it turns on and off will be bigger.
    • Turning Counter-Clockwise: Decreases the differential. This means the pump will run less time as the pressure difference between when it turns on and off will be smaller.
  7. Testing the Adjustment:

    • Restore power to the pump.
    • Run water to lower the pressure and observe the cut-in pressure (when the pump turns on).
    • Allow the pump to run and observe the cut-out pressure (when the pump turns off).
    • Repeat adjustments as needed until you achieve the desired pressure range.
  8. Replace the cover: Once satisfied, put the cover back on the pressure switch.

Important Considerations:

  • Pressure Tank Pre-charge: The air pressure in your pressure tank should be approximately 2 PSI below the cut-in pressure of the pump. Check and adjust the air pressure in the tank if needed.
  • Pressure Gauge: Use a reliable pressure gauge to accurately monitor the water pressure during adjustments.
  • Professional Help: If you're uncomfortable making these adjustments, consult a qualified plumber or well technician.
  • Do not exceed the maximum pressure rating of your pump, pressure tank, or plumbing system.
  • Consult your manual: The instructions above are generalized. Always consult the manual for your specific pump and pressure switch.
