How Do Rain Barrels Collect Water?

Published in Rainwater Harvesting 1 min read

Rain barrels primarily collect water through a connection to a building's existing downspout system.

Connecting Rain Barrels to Downspouts

The most common method involves redirecting rainwater from the downspouts into the rain barrel. Here's how it works:

  • Direct Cut Method: The downspout is cut, typically about 6 inches above the top of the rain barrel, allowing water to flow directly into the barrel.
  • Diversion Method: A diverter is installed on the downspout. This device redirects the water flow to the barrel while keeping the downspout functional.

Types of Diverters

Various diverters are available on the market, each with its own method of redirecting water. Some common types include:

  • First Flush Diverters: These divert the initial rainwater, which tends to be the dirtiest, away from the barrel, allowing cleaner water to be collected afterward.
  • Overflow Diverters: These automatically redirect water back into the downspout system when the barrel is full, preventing overflow.
