What is the Expensive Blood Type?

Published in Rare Blood Types 2 mins read

There is no single "expensive" blood type in terms of monetary value assigned to the blood itself. However, some blood types are incredibly rare and thus incredibly valuable due to their scarcity. The most expensive blood type, in terms of its rarity and the difficulty in obtaining it, is Rh null, also known as "golden blood".

The Rarity and Value of Rh Null Blood

Rh null blood is exceptionally rare. Globally, there are only about nine active donors known to possess this blood type. [^1] This extreme rarity makes Rh null blood invaluable because individuals with this blood type can only receive transfusions from other Rh null individuals. The limited supply and high demand make it the most precious blood type in the world.

This "expense" isn't reflected in a price tag, but rather in the logistical challenges and the global network required to ensure individuals with Rh null blood receive transfusions when needed. The cost associated is not a direct price on the blood itself, but rather the considerable effort needed to locate and manage this rare resource.

[^1]: An Rh null person has to rely on the cooperation of a small network of regular Rh null donors around the world if they need blood. Across the globe, there are only nine active donors for this blood group. This makes it the world's most precious blood type, hence the name "golden" blood. 19-Aug-2024
