Can XXY get pregnant?

Published in Rare Genetics 1 min read

It is possible for an XXY individual to get pregnant, but it is extremely rare. While most people with Klinefelter syndrome (KS), the genetic condition associated with the XXY karyotype, are male and infertile due to low sperm production, there have been documented cases of XXY individuals giving birth.

These pregnancies occur in cases where the XXY individual possesses female reproductive organs, either due to a lack of the SRY gene (which typically triggers male development), or other complex genetic variations.

It's important to understand that most XXY individuals identify as male and do not have the biological capacity to carry a pregnancy. However, the existence of these rare cases highlights the complexity of sex determination and the spectrum of human biological variation.
