How to Set Up Your Reed Diffuser

Published in Reed Diffuser Usage 3 mins read

To use reed sticks, you typically insert them into a bottle containing scented liquid, allowing them to absorb the fragrance and disperse it into the air.

Using reed sticks is a simple and effective way to add continuous fragrance to your space. They are designed to work with a reed diffuser, which consists of a bottle of scented oil and the porous reed sticks themselves.

Getting Started

Based on the process shown in the reference video, setting up a reed diffuser with reed sticks involves a few easy steps:

  1. Unpack Everything: Begin by removing all the items from your reed diffuser packaging. This usually includes the bottle of scented liquid, the lid for the bottle (often with holes), and the bundle of reed sticks.
  2. Prepare the Bottle: Ensure the bottle of scented oil is ready. If it has a seal or stopper, remove it carefully.
  3. Secure the Lid: Screw the provided lid onto the bottle. This lid often has openings specifically designed to hold the reed sticks upright.
  4. Insert the Reed Sticks: Take your reed diffusers (the sticks) and stick them inside the bottle through the holes in the lid. You can use several sticks at once; the more sticks you use, the stronger the fragrance throw will typically be.

Once the sticks are in the liquid, they will begin to soak up the oil and diffuse the scent into the surrounding area. You may start to smell the fragrance relatively quickly after setting it up.

How Reed Sticks Work

Reed sticks are made from a porous material, often rattan or natural reeds, containing many tiny channels. These channels act like miniature straws, drawing the scented oil up from the bottle through a process called capillary action. As the oil reaches the exposed part of the reed stick, it evaporates into the air, releasing the fragrance.

Tips for Optimal Fragrance

  • Initial Soak: Allow the reeds to soak in the oil for at least 24 hours initially to ensure they are fully saturated and begin diffusing effectively.
  • Flip the Reeds: To refresh the scent or increase the fragrance intensity, carefully flip the reeds over every few days or when the scent seems to fade. Dip the dry ends into the oil and expose the saturated ends to the air. Be mindful of drips when flipping.
  • Placement Matters: Place your reed diffuser in an area with good air circulation, but not directly in a draft, which can cause the oil to evaporate too quickly. A spot where people walk by frequently is ideal, as movement helps circulate the scent.
  • Adjust Intensity: You can adjust the strength of the fragrance by adding or removing reed sticks. Use fewer sticks for a lighter scent and more sticks for a stronger aroma.

Using reed sticks is a low-maintenance way to keep your home smelling pleasant without needing a flame or electricity.
