The Statue of Liberty is primarily powered by wind energy purchased by the federal government.
Since 2006, the federal government has procured wind power to supply electricity to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Specifically, they buy approximately nine million kilowatt-hours of wind power annually from Pepco Energy Services. Pepco Energy Services, in turn, sources this electricity from wind farms located in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. This commitment to wind energy makes the Statue of Liberty an icon powered by renewable resources.
