How to Use a Peak Flow Meter

Published in Respiratory Monitoring 2 mins read

Using a peak flow meter is a simple process that helps you measure how fast you can push air out of your lungs. It's often used by individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions to monitor their breathing.

Before taking a measurement, there are a couple of important preparation steps to ensure an accurate reading.

Preparing Your Peak Flow Meter

Proper preparation is key to getting a reliable peak flow reading. This involves checking the device and setting it up correctly.

Here are the initial steps:

  • Check the Mouthpiece: Look at your Peak flow meter to make sure the mouthpiece is clean and clear of any objects. Ensuring the mouthpiece is free from dust, debris, or obstructions is crucial for a clear airflow path.
  • Reset the Marker: Move the marker to the bottom of the numbered scale. The marker needs to be at the starting point (usually zero or the lowest number) before you begin your measurement. This allows it to accurately record the highest airflow achieved during your exhale.

These initial steps ensure the device is ready for you to take a breath and exhale forcefully into it to get your peak flow reading.
