How to Deep Clean Reusable Cloths?

Published in Reusable Cloth Cleaning 3 mins read

Deep cleaning reusable cloths, especially those heavily used for cleaning surfaces, can effectively remove stubborn grime, residue, and odors. One effective method involves a hot soak with washing soda before a regular wash cycle.

The Washing Soda Soak Method

This method helps to strip away built-up residue that regular washing might miss, revitalizing your cleaning cloths.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Follow these simple steps to deep clean your reusable cloths using washing soda:

  1. Prepare the Pot: Grab a large pot suitable for boiling water.
  2. Add Water and Washing Soda: Fill it with water, and add 1 tablespoon of washing soda per two litres. Washing soda (sodium carbonate) is a powerful cleaning agent that helps break down grease and dirt.
  3. Dissolve the Soda: Stir the mixture to dissolve the washing soda into the water.
  4. Add the Cloths: Carefully add your reusable cloths to the pot. It's important to not overcrowd the pot—your cleaning cloths need room to move around freely in the solution for effective cleaning.
  5. Heat and Soak: Place the pot on a stove and bring the water to a simmer or a gentle boil. Allow the cloths to soak and agitate in the hot solution for 15-30 minutes. You'll likely see dirt and residue lifting from the cloths into the water.
  6. Cool Down: Turn off the heat and let the water cool down completely.
  7. Rinse Thoroughly: Carefully remove the cloths once the water is cool enough to handle. Rinse them thoroughly under running water to remove the washing soda solution and loose grime.
  8. Machine Wash: After rinsing, machine wash the cloths as you normally would using your preferred laundry detergent. This removes any remaining residue and ensures they are fresh and clean.
  9. Dry: Dry the cloths according to their care instructions, typically by air drying or machine drying on a low heat setting.

This deep cleaning soak is particularly useful for microfibre cloths or other reusable cleaning rags that have become stiff or less absorbent over time due to detergent or grime buildup.

Using washing soda provides an extra cleaning boost that penetrates deep into the cloth fibers, leaving them cleaner and more effective for future use.
