Making Hidden Elements Visible Using Visibility/Graphics

Published in Revit Elements 3 mins read

To delete hidden elements in Revit, you first need to make them visible in the view. Once they are visible, you can select and delete them.

Here's how to make elements visible using the method described in the provided reference:

Elements can be hidden in a Revit view in several ways. If elements have been hidden by turning off their entire category or subcategory in the view's Visibility/Graphics Overrides, you can unhide them using the following steps, based on the reference:

  1. Navigate to the "View" tab: In the Revit ribbon, find and click on the View tab.
  2. Access Visibility/Graphics: Click on the Visibility/Graphics button (often abbreviated as VG or VV) in the Graphics panel. This opens the Visibility/Graphics dialog box.
  3. Locate the Hidden Category/Subcategory: Within the Visibility/Graphics dialog, browse through the different tabs (Model Categories, Annotation Categories, Analytical Model Categories, Imported Categories, Filters, Worksets) to find the category or subcategory that is currently unchecked (hidden).
  4. Unhide the Category/Subcategory: Check the checkbox next to the category or subcategory name. This action restores the visibility of all elements belonging to that category or subcategory in the current view.
  5. Apply Changes: Click "OK" at the bottom of the dialog box to apply the changes and close the dialog.
  • The hidden elements from the selected category or subcategory will now be visible again in your view.

Deleting the Now Visible Elements

Once the elements are visible in the view, you can proceed to delete them using standard Revit deletion methods:

  1. Select the Elements: Click on the elements you wish to delete. You can select multiple elements by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking, or by using a selection window (clicking and dragging the cursor).
  2. Delete: With the elements selected, you can either:
    • Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
    • Go to the Modify tab in the ribbon (which appears automatically when elements are selected) and click the Delete button (represented by a red 'X').

Revit may show warnings if the deleted elements have dependencies or hosted elements. Review these warnings carefully before proceeding with the deletion.

By first making the hidden elements visible using methods like Visibility/Graphics Overrides (as described in the reference) and then using the standard delete function, you can effectively remove unwanted hidden elements from your Revit project.
