How Do I Delete Groups in Revit?

Published in Revit Groups 3 mins read

You delete a group in Revit by removing all of its placed instances from your project, which in turn removes the group type definition itself.

Deleting a group in Revit involves removing all occurrences of that specific group throughout your project. Once all instances are deleted, the group definition is automatically purged from the Project Browser.

Deleting a Group Using the Project Browser Method

A straightforward method for deleting a group involves using the Project Browser to select and delete all its instances simultaneously. This is often the most efficient way to ensure all placements are removed.

Here are the steps based on the standard procedure:

  1. Navigate to the Project Browser: Locate the Project Browser panel, typically on the left side of the Revit window.
  2. Find the Group: Expand the "Groups" section in the Project Browser. This section lists all model and detail groups defined in your project.
  3. Select the Group: Right-click on the name of the specific group you wish to delete.
  4. Select All Instances: From the right-click context menu, click Select All Instances In Entire Project. This action will highlight and select every placement of that group throughout your entire Revit model.
  5. Delete the Instances: With all instances selected in the model view, you can now delete them.
    • Click the Modify | Groups tab Modify panel (Delete) button on the ribbon bar that appears.
    • Alternatively, press the Delete key on your keyboard.

What Happens When a Group is Deleted?

  • All instances of the group that were placed in your model are removed.
  • The group definition is removed from the "Groups" section in the Project Browser. You will no longer be able to place new instances of that specific group type.

Practical Considerations

  • Undoing Deletion: If you accidentally delete a group, you can typically use the Undo command (Ctrl+Z) immediately after the action to restore it.
  • Dependencies: Be aware that deleting a group might affect other elements or annotations linked to its components. For example, dimensions or tags referencing elements within the group will likely be removed or become invalid.
  • Sheets: If instances of the group were placed on sheets (e.g., in views), deleting the group instances will remove them from those views as well.

This method ensures that the group is completely removed from your project, both the instances and the definition.
