How to Open an IFC File in Revit LT

Published in Revit IFC Import 2 mins read

Opening an IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) file in Revit LT allows you to bring architectural, structural, and MEP data from other software into your project. The process is straightforward and involves using the 'Open' command specifically for IFC files.

To open an IFC file directly in Revit LT, follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to the File tab in the ribbon.
  2. Click Open.
  3. From the dropdown menu that appears, select IFC.
  4. Browse to the location of the IFC file you want to open.
  5. Select the required IFC file.
  6. Click Open.

Revit LT will then import the IFC data and create a new Revit project (.RVT) based on the information contained within the IFC file.

After Opening Your IFC File

Once the IFC file is open in Revit LT, it's important to perform some initial checks to ensure the model is correctly positioned and leveled within your project space.

Checking Levels and Coordinates

  • Check Floor Levels: Open an Elevation View (like North, South, East, or West) to verify that the floor levels from the imported IFC match your project's requirements. You may need to adjust or add levels in Revit to align with the imported geometry.
  • Check Coordinates: Open a Plan View (like a Floor Plan or Site Plan) to check the coordinates of the imported model. This helps ensure the building is positioned correctly relative to project base points or survey points.

Correcting Coordinates

If the coordinates of the imported IFC model are not correct, you can adjust them using specific tools in Revit LT.

  • To correct the coordinates, use the Manage tab in the ribbon.
  • In the Coordinates panel, click Specify Coordinates at a Point.
  • Important Note: This tool should only be used at a known point within the model or site to accurately define the coordinate system.

By following these steps, you can successfully open and begin working with IFC files in Revit LT, integrating data from various sources into your design process.
