How Do I Change the Linked View in Revit?

Published in Revit Linked Models 4 mins read

You can change the linked view in Revit by accessing the Visibility/Graphic Overrides settings for the linked model and selecting a specific view from the linked file to control its display.

Understanding how linked models display in your host project is crucial for managing your project views effectively. By default, Revit often controls the display of a linked model based on the settings in your host view. However, you have the flexibility to tell Revit to instead use the display settings defined in a specific view within the linked model file itself.

Controlling Linked Model Display Settings

Revit offers several ways to control the appearance of linked models in your views. One powerful method is to leverage the display settings of views already created in the linked file. This is often referred to as displaying the link "By Linked View."

Steps to Change the Linked View

To change which linked view controls the display of your Revit link in a specific host view, follow these steps:

  1. Open Visibility/Graphic Overrides: In the host view where you want to change the linked model's display, open the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog. You can do this by typing VV or VG on your keyboard, or by going to the 'View' tab and clicking 'Visibility/Graphics'.
  2. Navigate to Revit Links: In the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog, click on the Revit Links tab.
  3. Access Display Settings: Find the linked Revit model you want to adjust in the list. In the 'Display Settings' column for that link, click the button, which usually says "By Host View" by default.
  4. Change Control Method: The 'RVT Link Display Settings' dialog will open. At the top, you'll see a setting for 'Control'. Change the dropdown option from "By Host View" (or "Custom") to By Linked View.
    • Reference 1: Select By linked view.
  5. Select the Linked View: Once 'By Linked View' is selected for 'Control', a new option appears below labeled 'Linked view'. For Linked view, select the view in the linked model whose display settings you want to use for the linked model in the current host view.
    • Reference 2: For Linked view, select the view in the linked model whose display settings you want to use for the linked model in the current host view.
  6. Confirm Changes: Click OK in the 'RVT Link Display Settings' dialog, and then OK in the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog to apply the changes to your view.

Display Setting Control Options

Control Method Description Useful For
By Host View Uses the Visibility/Graphic Overrides settings from the current host view. Standard display control, common use.
By Linked View Uses the Visibility/Graphic Overrides settings from a selected view in the linked model. Coordinating disciplines, standardizing views.
Custom Allows manual override of visibility settings for categories within the link. Fine-tuning specific elements or categories.

Using the 'By Linked View' option is particularly useful when you want to ensure that a linked model, such as a structural or MEP model, appears consistently across multiple views in your host project, based on how the originating discipline set up their views.

Remember that the selected linked view only controls the visibility and graphics of the elements within the linked model. It does not change the geometry or content of the link itself.
