Where is Rib Number 8 Located?

Published in Rib Cage Anatomy 2 mins read

Rib number 8, also known as the eighth rib, is a false rib located in the thoracic cage. It sits superior to the ninth rib and inferior to the seventh rib. The eighth rib is situated laterally to both the eighth costal cartilage and the seventh and eighth thoracic vertebrae. It articulates with the T8 vertebra posteriorly and connects anteriorly to the costal cartilage.

Understanding Rib Location and Types

To better understand the location of rib 8, it's helpful to know the different types of ribs:

  • True ribs (1-7): These ribs directly attach to the sternum (breastbone) via their individual costal cartilages.
  • False ribs (8-10): These ribs indirectly attach to the sternum; their costal cartilages connect to the cartilage of the rib above them, ultimately joining the sternum.
  • Floating ribs (11-12): These ribs don't attach to the sternum at all.

Rib 8, being a false rib, shares its connection to the sternum indirectly through the seventh rib's costal cartilage.

Palpating Rib 8

The eighth rib can be palpated (felt) by counting down six ribs from the second rib. The second rib is a readily identifiable landmark due to its proximity to the clavicle (collarbone). Counting ribs from the seventh to the tenth is also a reliable method for locating the eighth rib.

Additional Considerations

While the general location of rib 8 is consistent, slight variations can exist due to individual anatomical differences. However, the descriptions provided above accurately reflect its typical position within the human rib cage.
